Tim Peters is a long-time character in the Python world, and started the SpamBayes project after BarryWarsaw goaded him into it. Barry is the primary author and maintainer of GNU Mailman, and was looking for a better spam filtering approach for high-volume mailing lists. SpamBayes was the result. Ironically, it's used a heck of a lot for personal email now, but never got integrated with Mailman. Nevertheless, the high-volume tech mailing lists hosted at mail.python.org and mail.zope.org are filtered with SpamBayes now thanks to heroic efforts by GregWard.

I don't hate spam. To the contrary, it's often amusing. I like it a lot better now that SpamBayes shuffles it off into its own folder, so I can enjoy spam in quality time uninterrupted by silly work distractions - heh.
